Biography:
Born in the capitol of El Salvador in 1969,
Mauricio Aviles immigrated with his parents to San Francisco,
California in 1973. Growing up in the Mission District,
he was constantly surrounded by the latin rhythms of the
barrio. His father had a company that produced theatrical
and musical events that featured 'la cultura latina', and
eventually Mauricio became involved with his father's creative
enterprise, helping to produce several festivals and concerts
in the Bay Area. The people and the music of this period
provided the foundation for Mauricio's involvement in the
City's burgeoning dance scene that evolved throughout the
90's.
As a dj Mauricio's first actual gigs began
at the City's bastion of underground vibration, the EndUp.
As a protege of Arron Olivares, Mauricio began forming his
own sounds and creating a devoted following that are still
with him today. His next regular residencies were simultaneously
Corazon, a latin flavored weekly in the heart of the Mission
District, and Metrojazz a very popular and original weekend
event that successfully combined down tempo, abstract beats
and house, a hybrid that would eventually become to describe
the 'San Francisco Sound'.
Acknowledging the urban, afro origins of
dance music, with a personal blend of his own latino roots,
and a constant endeavor to break new ground, Mauricio's
sound is hauntingly personal, emotional and consistently
fresh. Creating a niche within the deep house sound, his
style, though ethereal, is undeniably funky and always elicits
a great response on the dance floor.
Now with an internationally successful
compilation under his belt (Naked Music's Nude Dimension
II), Mauricio has begun his production career with a debut
single slated for release in Summer 2001. As an emissary
for Naked Music, Mauricio has also commenced a global tour,
ensuring that America's hottest new dance label is well
represented.
